Review: WeVibe Melt, Compared to Womanizer Starlet & Dame Aer

I’ve wanted a WeVibe Melt for years. I was dying to bring the (magically, orgasmically) unique sensations of a suction toy into partnered sex, but the other ones I have just don’t work for that: the Womanizer Starlet is too bulky and its vibes are too weak, and the Dame Aer is too big and way too loud. I’d read the WeVibe Melt is more intense than a lot of other suction toys (necessary, to me at least – you’re just not gonna feel feather-light air on your clit when you’re getting pounded) and the body was designed to be used during intercourse. I’ve owned it for almost a year now and I can easily say the Melt is the best all-around suction toy I’ve tried, and it’s my favorite for using with a partner.

Body

The Melt feels like a natural fit against my palm and is easy to hold in most positions, with its slightly grippy, silicone body and ergonomic shape. More notably, it’s easy to hold in positions like missionary/woman on top/lotus (i.e., face-to-face positions where your pelvises are close together and there isn’t a lot of room for a toy), making it truly versatile for partnered sex. It’s the only suction toy I own that consistently works for this purpose. The entire toy is also seamless and waterproof, and therefore very easy to clean – unlike, say, the Starlet, with its tiny, decorative seams that are deeply annoying and difficult to clean.

The Melt comes in two colors: coral (the color I have) and midnight blue (a deep navy).

Nozzle

Like all the suction toys I’ve tested, the Melt has a silicone nozzle. Unlike some suction toys, the nozzle doesn’t detach from the rest of the body for cleaning; the entire Melt is a single waterproof piece, and you can wash the whole thing at once, which is convenient. The nozzle is stiffer than other suction toys I’ve used – it’s a lot harder than the Womanizer Starlet’s nozzle and slightly harder than the Dame Aer’s nozzle.

Because the Melt’s nozzle is stiffer, I find it a little more difficult to create a firm seal with it around my clit—only a little, though, it’s not really a problem—and sometimes find myself pressing down harder than I would with other suction toys. Afterwards, I occasionally have some irritation around my clit if I’ve gone a little too hard, but nothing that isn’t better within a day. Overall, it’s a fine nozzle that gets the job done—and is probably necessary in order for the toy to retain its shape over time, unlike the Starlet’s detachable nozzles that are softer and can be replaced—it’s just not my absolute favorite.

The size of the nozzle may also be a factor, depending on your clit/genitals – especially if it’s on the larger side, as not all suction toys will accommodate all anatomies. The WeVibe Melt’s nozzle is somewhere in the middle with a nozzle measuring 17 x 11 mm, compared to the Dame Aer’s at 20 x 14 mm and the Womanizer Starlet’s at 16 x 12 mm.

Power/Intensity

The Melt is far beyond my little Starlet in terms of power (though the Starlet is still my favorite when I’m solo; I just wish the battery lasted longer than a measly half hour). The Dame Aer feels fairly comparable, maybe even a little stronger than the Melt, but it’s also extremely loud, making it fairly useless to me for partnered sex.

While the Starlet has only four intensity settings and the Aer has five intensities/five patterns, the Melt has 12 intensities as well as patterns that you can customize through the free app that connects to the toy. Personally, I rarely even need to go past the fourth intensity level on the Melt – the first level feels almost comparable to the third or fourth level on the Starlet. If power is important to you, the Melt should get the job done.

Buttons

The Melt has two control buttons (+ and -), as does the Starlet. The Aer has three (+, -, and a switch for patterns). The Melt also connects to an app that lets you or a partner control the toy remotely.

Noise

The Melt is the quietest suction toy I own – which is to say, it’s certainly not silent, but it’s quiet enough that I don’t feel conspicuous using it in an apartment with some music or a movie on in the background. That being said, my walls aren’t paper thin, and I don’t particularly care if my neighbors do hear my vibrator… so, you know. YMMV. In any case, I think the noise level is important to consider if you’re planning on using it during partnered sex because you’re less likely to be under the covers than you are while masturbating (right? I guess that’s not true for everyone, but I feel like the more bodies there are, the less likely you are to be covered up), which muffles a lot of toys considerably. As I said above, the Dame Aer is similar to the Melt in terms of power, but it’s so damn loud that I wouldn’t even consider using it during sex, let alone turning the power all the way up while doing so.

Battery

The Melt lasts about 1.5 hours on a full charge, same as the Dame Aer. As I’ve complained before, the Starlet lasts only 30 minutes on a full charge (but also takes only 30 minutes to charge).

Price

We’ve reached the biggest drawback to the Melt, and that is the high price tag. $150 is… a lot. I saved up and waited years for a big sale to come around before taking the leap – but I also don’t regret it at all. But if you’ve never used a suction toy before, I’d almost certainly recommend trying something less pricey to make sure you like these kinds of toys, and think about what you’ll be using it for.

Bottom Line

The WeVibe Melt is expensive – there are certainly cheaper options out there that will tick most of the same boxes. If you’re mainly planning on using your suction toy solo, then there are less pricey options that are just as intense as the Melt (like the Dame Aer). If intensity isn’t as important, then there are much cheaper options (like the Womanizer Starlet). But if you’re looking for a great and versatile suction toy to use during sex with a partner—one that won’t be too weak to feel or be impossible to wedge between your bodies or be loud enough to alert the entire building to what you’re doing—I do think the Melt is the best one out there, even taking the price into account.

You can buy the WeVibe Melt directly from WeVibe, or from a reputable retailer like Early2Bed, and you can buy a Womanizer here.
